A Comparison of Constructive Heuristics with the Objective of Minimizing Makespan in the Flow-Shop Scheduling Problem

چکیده
We propose a constructive heuristic approach for the solution of the permutation flow-shop problem. The objective function of all algorithms is the minimization of the makespan. Our approach employs Johnson’s rule to give a good initial solution for the improvement heuristic, also known as metaheuristics. The proposed heuristic algorithm, named MOD, is tested against four other heuristics that are well-known from the open literature, namely, NEH, Palmer’s Slope Index, CDS and Gupta’s algorithm. The computational experiment itself contains 120 benchmark problem data sets proposed by Taillard. We compare our results to the solutions represented by NEH outputs. The computational experiment shows that the proposed algorithm is a feasible alternative for practical application when solving n-job and m-machine in flow-shop scheduling problems to give relatively good solutions in a short-time interval.

A Mathematical Model for a Flow Shop Scheduling Problem with Fuzzy Processing Times
This paper presents a mathematical model for a flow shop scheduling problem consisting of m machine and n jobs with fuzzy processing times that can be estimated as independent stochastic or fuzzy numbers. In the traditional flow shop scheduling problem, the typical objective is to minimize the makespan). However,, two significant criteria for each schedule in stochastic models are: expectable m...
متن کاملMinimizing the total tardiness and makespan in an open shop scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times
We consider an open shop scheduling problem with setup and processing times separately such that not only the setup times are dependent on the machines, but also they are dependent on the sequence of jobs that should be processed on a machine. A novel bi-objective mathematical programming is designed in order to minimize the total tardiness and the makespan. Among several mult...
متن کاملA New Lower Bound for Flexible Flow Shop Problem with Unrelated Parallel Machines
Flexible flow shop scheduling problem (FFS) with unrelated parallel machines contains sequencing in flow shop where, at any stage, there exists one or more processors. The objective consists of minimizing the maximum completion time. Because of NP-completeness of FFS problem, it is necessary to use heuristics method to address problems of moderate to large scale problem. Therefore, for assessme...
متن کاملMinimizing Makespan with Start Time Dependent Jobs in a Two Machine Flow Shop
[if gte mso 9]> The purpose of this paper is to consider the problem of scheduling a set of start time-dependent jobs in a two-machine flow shop, in which the actual processing times of jobs increase linearly according to their starting time. The objective of this problem is to minimize the makespan. The problem is known to be NP-hardness[ah1] ; therefore, there is no polynomial-time algorithm...
متن کاملImproved teaching–learning-based and JAYA optimization algorithms for solving flexible flow shop scheduling problems
Flexible flow shop (or a hybrid flow shop) scheduling problem is an extension of classical flow shop scheduling problem. In a simple flow shop configuration, a job having ‘g’ operations is performed on ‘g’ operation centres (stages) with each stage having only one machine. If any stage contains more than one machine for providing alternate processing facility, then the problem...
